Members of the community gathered for the 1st Annual Dodge Goulter Memorial Golf Tournament at Kettle Creek Golf Club and later for dinner at the Tottenham Legion last Sunday.
In 2009, the 13-year-old Dodge was killed while riding his bike on the 3rd Line. While it has no doubt been hard for family and friends, they have all come together to take part in this annual fundraiser, led by his mom Alicia.
Each year since Dodge passed away, Alicia has planned a different event to raise money that goes toward a fund that helps children in the community get into sports.
Even though it was the first year for the golfing event, Alicia said 36 golfers came out and 65 people came out for the dinner, which helped raise roughly $3,000 for the charity.
“I was hoping for more people, but for our first year doing it, I was very pleased,” she said. “I would really like to thank the Ladies Auxiliary and the Legion. They did the roast beef dinner for us. All of our local supporters and everyone who supported us – we got a lot of donations this year and for everybody who came out to support us, all the money is going to a great cause and we’re going to be able to help so many children this year and the years to come.”
In a previous interview with The Times, Alicia said the program has already helped many children get into sports in the community.
“We help local children play organized sports, so it could be something as simple as a pair of ballet shoes or helping out with registration,” she said. “Pretty much whatever they need to play sports, we’ve taken care of. We’ve helped 13 children and two youth baseball teams so far.”
The fact that it’s all local is something that is appealing to many, as money that is raised goes towards helping children right within the immediate community.
There have been many different needs for the 13 children that have benefited thus far and the need will no doubt only get bigger.
Dodge was a big car enthusiast, lover of bikes and avid sports fan, so Alicia knew right away that this was what she needed to do to honour her son’s memory.
“He was an avid football fan and player,” she said. “I knew that he would like this if I was helping kids in sports.”
