The famous Alliston Potato Festival returns to New Tecumseth this weekend.
The 41st Annual Potato Festival is a weekend long string of events sponsored by the ABIA, the Town of New Tecumseth, Tim Hortons, Honda of Canada Manufacturing, WD Potato Ltd., RPM Industrial Inc., and Precision Mark.
The Alliston Potato Festival Committee is once again offering free shuttle buses on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Bus stops will be located at Zehrs on Young Street, the Alliston Legion on Dufferin Street and the Fairgrounds on Beech Street.
Fairground ticket prices for 2014 are: Weekend pass $10, daily admission $5, seniors $3, under 11 free. Weekend passes can be purchased at the gate, Brisco Furniture or Taylor’s Jewellers.
All Weekend
• Midway – Fairgrounds on Church Street. Rides, carnival games, food and entertainment.
• Beer Garden – Live music plus DJ Nixter. Hosted by the Lions Club of Alliston.
Friday, August 8:
• 6 p.m. to midnight – midway opens at Fairgrounds includes flea market and beer gardens (closes at 1 p.m.)
• 7 p.m. Texas Hold’em Poker Tournament – Memorial Arena. Registration at 6:30 p.m. $40 buy in.
• 7 p.m. – Rotary Club Potato Festival Parade. Starts at Banting Memorial High School, proceeds west along Victoria Street.
• Following the parade – Brant Matthews ‘The Fire Guy’ at Victoria and Mill Street; live music from ‘Burrito Sunrise’ at Church and Victoria Street; Kobbler Jay ‘The Eccentric Juggler’ on Victoria Street West; Jack Flash ‘The Juggling Fugitive’ on Victoria Street West.
Saturday, August 9:
• 7 a.m. – Pancake Breakfast at St. John’s United. Closes at 11 a.m.
• 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. – Classic Car Show. Along Victoria Street. Eight categories, registration $10. Hosted by the Recycled Teenagers Classic Car & Truck Show Club Inc.
• 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. – Downtown Market. Includes a sidewalk sale, craft and food vendors and free bag of potatoes at information booth. Also: rock wall, music, face painting, balloon artists, clowns, street performers, mechanical bull, Honda of Canada Manufacturing car display and ‘Vertical Rush Inflatable’.
• 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. – Farmers’ Market. Located at Victoria Street and Mill Street. Runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. until October 25th.
• 9:30 a.m. – Pine Block Car Races at Fairgrounds pavilion. Registration at 9 a.m. Entry $13 includes car kit.
• 10 a.m. – Dart Tournament at Alliston legion. $40 registration fee. Registration at 9 a.m.
• 10 a.m.– Zorba Balls at Fairgrounds. Presented by Elephant Thoughts. Closes at 5 p.m.
• 10 a.m. – Book Sale. Memorial Branch (Alliston) New Tecumseth Public Library.
• 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. – Sugartones at 35 Victoria Street East.
• 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. – Joe Adamick at 35 Victoria and Mill Street
• 11 a.m. – BINGO at Fairgrounds pavilion. Closes at 6 p.m.
• 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. – Alliston Nikolettes tumbling demonstration on Church Street South.
• 12 p.m. – Midway opens at Fairgrounds. Open until 1 a.m.
• 12 p.m. – Beer gardens opens. Open until 11 p.m.
• 12:30 p.m. – Glen Cameron performs at Beer Gardens. Ends at 4:30 p.m.
• 1 p.m. – Potato Salad Contest at 119 Victoria Street W.
• 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. – Wild West Show at Fairgrounds.
• 2 p.m. – Bill Dickenson at legion. Ends at 6 p.m.
• 3 p.m. – Creature Quest at Fairgrounds.
• 8 p.m. – Cutler Boyd Band at Legion. Ends at 1 a.m.
• 9 p.m. – Your New Neighbour at Beer Gardens.
Sunday, August 10th:
• 9 a.m. – Flea Market at Fairgrounds. Closes at 5 p.m.
• 10 a.m. – Zorba Balls at Fairgrounds. Closes at 5 p.m.
• 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. – Team K9 Dog Agility Show at Fairgrounds.
• 11 a.m. – Midway opens at Fairgrounds. Closes at 5 p.m.
• 11 a.m. – Non-denominational church service at New Tecumseth Recreation Centre.
• 11 a.m. – Dart Tournament at Legion. Registration at 10 a.m. $5 registration fee.
• 11:30 a.m. – The Magic Duda at Fairgrounds.
• 12 p.m. – BINGO at Fairgrounds. Closes at 5 p.m.
• 12 p.m. – Beer Garden opens at Fairgrounds. Closes at 5 p.m.
• 12 p.m. – Beeton Boomers perform at Beer Garden. Ends at 4 p.m.
• 2 p.m. – MacMurchy School of Highland Dance demonstration at Fairgrounds.
• 2 p.m. – Lawn Tractor Races at Fairgrounds.
• 2:30 p.m. – Star Burst Cheer Elite at Fairgrounds.
• 6 p.m. – Beeton Creek Rising at Riverdale Park. Ends at 8 p.m.
