Open letter to the voters of Simcoe–Grey

Dear editor:
I think we need to give Kellie Leitch a break. Dr. Leitch currently holds four jobs, each one of which would be considered full-time.
Job 1. Member of Parliament for Simcoe-Grey: As our representative in the House of Commons, Dr. Leitch is responsible to promote the interests of the residents of her riding.
Job 2. Minister of Labour: Admittedly, Stephen Harper has no time for anything to do with labour, but that does not mean that Dr. Leitch doesn’t have a lot of work to do – in fact, I think that her workload in this portfolio is probably heavier because of Harper’s indifference.
Job 3. Minister Responsible for the Status of Women: Again, this is a portfolio for which Stephen Harper has no time. Again, this means that Dr. Leitch is required to carry extra weight, which can be the only explanation for her unwillingness to investigate the missing and murdered indigenous women – she simply does not have the time.
Job 4. Pediatric Orthopedic Surgeon: Dr. Leitch is required to spend approximately one week per month as a surgeon in order to maintain her credentials, which seriously cuts into the time she has available to perform her duties as our MP and as a dual-portfolio Cabinet Minister.
I believe that she works way too hard, and that it’s up to us (the voters of Simcoe–Grey) to help her relax a bit, and to get back to doing what she loves most – helping kids get well. Dr. Leitch is, by all accounts, one of the best pediatric surgeons in the country, and it’s wrong for her to be wasting her considerable talent and training in the House of Commons. It’s wrong for us (her constituents) to expect Dr. Leitch to continue to work as hard as she undoubtedly does; and for us to monopolize her time and talent.
We can help Dr. Leitch simply by not voting for her on October 19 – and if she could, on October 20, I’m sure she would thank each and every one of us who had the compassion to vote for someone else!
Doug Pearce,
Tottenham
