The Town of New Tecumseth has voted favourably to waive requirements of the initial site plan agreement with Ken Beattie of the 13th Line, for the construction of phase 1 of his potato vodka distillery.
Beattie, who filed site plan applications with the Town last fall, says he has an urgent need to proceed with phase 1 – the construction of a small building on an existing foundation footprint on his potato farm – in order to supply the LCBO with orders as early as this June.
Speaking to council on behalf of Beattie was Peter Hendershott, of Edgewood Consulting.
“I wanted to inform you that as a member of the team that is putting together the submission for site plan approval for Beattie’s Distillery, we have decided that it is in our, and the communities, best interest to apply for a waiving of the initial site plan approval process for the proposed Beattie’s Distillery,” Hendershott said. “ … The objective for the high level of insistence is because as a new distillery to the area we currently have pressing commitments to supply the LCBO with product as soon as June of this year. There is a strong worry at this time, that if we are subjected to the full measure of site plan approval for the initial phase of the building project, that timelines with the LCBO will not be met and will lead to the disruption of the entire Beattie’s Distillery business plan, and its relationship with the LCBO.”
On behalf of Beattie, Hendershott assured council that Beattie’s Distillery had every intention of meeting all the requirements of site plan approval during phase 2 of the project.
Town of New Tecumseth Ward 2 Councillor Michael Beattie, Ken Beattie’s son, sat out of the discussion on the issue.
Council voted unanimously to support the motion to proceed.
