In the early morning hours of Aug. 19, 2016, members of the Nottawasaga Detachment, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), were called to the scene of a fire involving the Alliston Feed Service located on Albert Street just east of King Street, in the Town of Alliston.
Fire Services from New Tecumseth, were assisted by Adjala Tosorontio Fire Service, to bring this fire under control. In the end, this historical building had to be completely destroyed. Investigators from the Office of the Fire Marshal were called to assist with the investigation as the source of the fire appeared to be intentional.
For safety reasons, residents living in the immediate area including residents of two neighbouring apartment buildings were evacuated until firefighters were able to control the fire.
Following a diligent and tenacious investigation by the Nottawasaga Detachment Crime Unit, Aaron Gareau, age 23, of Tottenham, was arrested on Aug. 29, and charged with Arson, Mischief and Endangering Life.
