The boys of summer are back on the diamond.

The North Dufferin Baseball League has started the 2018 season but after a late spring that had snow on the diamonds just a couple of weeks ago, the early games are more about shaking off some winter rust and getting back into the swing of things.

Most teams have only had a couple of chances to get out and practice before the season got underway.

With 14 teams in the senior division this year there’s going to be a lot of fierce competition to move up into the top eight positions this season to secure a playoff booth.

The Alliston Athletics played their opener on May 5, when the went to Ivy to take on the Rangers.

The highlight of the game was Chris Leslie’s grand slam home run.

Despite getting four runs on a single at-bat, the Athletics had to settle for a 9-5 loss to the Rangers.

The Athletics played their home opener on the diamond at the Tottenham Community Centre when they hosted the Bolton Brewers on Tuesday, May 8.

It turned into the second loss of the season for the Alliston squad when the Brewers starting bringing in the runs and left with a 16-3 win.

The Athletics were back at it the following night when they hosted the other Bolton team – the

Dodgers.

They managed a good game scoring seven runs, but were down three at the end of the high scoring game and had to settle for a 10-7 loss to give them an 0-3 record in the early part of the season.

The Athletics will have a couple of road games before returning home to Riverdale Park in Alliston.

On Sunday, May 27, they will host the New Lowell Knights.

The first pitch is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
