Hornets give up loss to Stayner in low scoring game

October 21, 2021   ·   0 Comments

The Alliston Hornets gave up their second loss of the season to the Stayner Siskins during Friday, October 15’s home game at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre.

It was a low scoring game with both sides getting pucks on net, but few past the goalies.

The Hornets opened the scoring in the first period on a goal from Mitchell Smilsky at the 5:03 mark in the frame to give the Alliston squad an early lead.

There was no scoring from either team in the second frame despite a lot of back and forth action on the ice.

It was a tie game at 1:20 into the third when Stayner slipped one past Alliston goalie Rod Lewis.

The Siskins got the go-ahead goal at the midway mark in the period to make it a 2-1 game.

The Hornets put the extra attacker on the ice in the last minute of play in a bid to tie it up, but a final empty net goal gave the Siskins a 3-1 win.

“I thought we came out well, but we couldn’t [put] pucks by that goalie, he’s a big goalie,” said Hornets forward Smilsky. “He was solid defender and we couldn’t bury pucks on him.”

A scoreless second period wasn’t helped by the fact that the Hornets had four penalties they had to kill.

“We got ourselves in the (penalty) kill a lot, we were in the box too much in that period,” Mitchell said. “So were on our heels for most of the period and we lost our momentum. It didn’t help our momentum going into the third but I thought we held well in the penalty kill. We worked on the penalty kill all this week so it worked out well.”

It’s still early in the season, but already there’s a story shaping up in the standings.

The Orillia Terriers have started strong and are leading with a 5-0 record. They are followed by Stayner in second place with a 5-1 record and the Schomberg Cougars who have four wins and a tie.

The Hornets will be back in action this Friday, October 22, when the host the Midland Flyers at the NTRC.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
