Banting Legacy Foundation has new exhibits to commemorate World Diabetes Day

November 11, 2021   ·   0 Comments

World Diabetes Day is observed every year on November 14.

That date is also the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting – co-discover of insulin and Canada’s first Nobel Laureate.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin. The discovery has resulted in hundreds of millions of lives being saved world-wide as a result of that medical breakthrough made at the University of Toronto in 1921.

It is regarded as one of the greatest medical discoveries of all time.

To celebrate that milestone and honour Banting, the Sir Frederick Banting Legacy Foundation has developed major new exhibits, new videos, and installed a permanent monument at the Diabetes Management and Education Centre at the Banting Homestead Heritage Park in Alliston.

The public is invited to come out and see the new exhibits at the Banting Homestead.

You can walk the legacy trail – open dawn to dusk – see the new monument that is a salute to the discovery team, and schedule a visit to tour the historic buildings and see the exhibits.

As part of the continuing effort to fight diabetes, the Sir Frederick Banting Legacy Foundation will release details of the Rural Diabetes Coalition on November 14.

This collaborative coalition will extend the reach and impact of the Your-onset Diabetes Awareness and Prevention Campaign.

The target of this campaign is the 150,000 school-age youth in the region near the Diabetes Management and Education Centre.

Councils, District health Units, School Boards, municipalities, pediatric diabetes centres, family health teams, and community-based groups are invited to join in the effort.
