Hornets post back-to-back wins over the weekend

There’s been a lot of good news coming out of the Alliston Hornets camp over the past couple of weeks.

After a rocky start at the beginning of the season, the squad seems to have settled down and are starting to play their game as they gel as a unit on the ice.

The squad travelled to Schomberg on Saturday, November 13, and left the ice with a 5-4 win over the Cougars.

They returned to the ice the following night at the New Tecumseth Recreation Complex to host the Penetang Kings.

Pentang opened the scoring early in the first period.

The Hornets tied it up when Jack Micone scored at the 17:39 mark in the frame.

Alliston went ahead by two in the second period on goals from Braden Henderson and Ben Taylor.

It was the third period that sealed the deal when Owen Fralick hit the back of the Penetang net, followed by a goal from Jakob Power to make it a 5-1 game with just over 15 minutes left on the clock.

The Kings got one final marker late in the period, but they were buried too far to make a reasonable attempt at a comeback.

The Hornets outshot the Kings 47 – 24 at the end of the second period. At the end of the night the Alliston team hit the Penetang net 64 times.

“We just talked about in the room – we are 7-2 here in the last nine games,” said coach Travis Chapman after the Penetang game. “Early on for us, with how young we are, it’s taken our guys a little bit to figure out how to be junior players. Now that they are, we’re getting a much better sense of what our group can be. We’re starting to get healthy now with players back in the line-up. Now we are looking more like the team we thought we were going to look like during the summer. You’re really seeing that offensively, what we can be when we’re dictating the pace and the terms of the game. We thought it was just a matter of time for our guys to get comfortable.”

The fact that the Hornets managed 67 shots on goal, Chapman said, was a result of the team controlling the play.

“The powerplays – I don’t how many we had but it’s got to be around ten – when you’re on the powerplay that much you’re going to get a ton of shots. We were controlling the in-zone play, if you’re always in the offensive zone, you’re going to get those lopsided totals. Our guys are really figuring out how to play the system we want to play and where the areas to get to [in order to] shoot the puck is. We’re starting to feel real good about our offensive game for sure.”

The Hornets remain in fourth place in the Carruthers Division standings with an 8-5-1 record so far for the season.

The Stayner Siskins remain in first place in the division with an 11-1 record. They are followed by the Orillia Terriers in second place and the Schomberg Cougars in third.

The Hornets will be back on home ice at the NTRC this Friday, November 19, when they will host the Huntsville Otters.
