Athletics come up short in game against Barrie

July 25, 2013   ·   0 Comments

Despite having several good innings, the Alliston Athletics junior team were two short at the end of Tuesday’s game against the Barrie Red Sox ending with a 7–5 loss to the visitors.

The Athletics had an early lead in the first inning when Jordan Brewer stole first base followed by a walk with the bases loaded to bring in another run and give the Alliston squad a 2–0 lead at the end of the first.

It didn’t take long for the Sox to respond with a good second inning with a double to right field and an error at first base that brought in three runs for the frame and a one run lead.

Moving to the bottom of the fourth the Athletics led off with a single from Brewer and a double from Mac Sealy to advance the Athletics to third base.

Dave Blanch drove in a run on a line drive that bounced off the Barrie pitchers ankle and caused a delay when the infielders had to move in to get the ball that dribbled off through the dirt.

The Barrie player was okay after shaking off what could have been a game stopping injury.

The Sox expanded the lead in the fifth inning with a single run.

The side retired when first baseman Johnathan Cholak snagged a blistering line-drive down the base line.

With the bases loaded in the sixth the Sox scored on a dinger that dropped short in right field and allowed the player on third to cross the plate.

Alliston’s Mac Sealy started off the sixth with a double to start the team in motion for a comeback.

Jake Luck drove in two runs on a double to close the gap in the late stages of the game.

Despite the loss, coach Colin Iddison said he thought the team played a well structured game.

“We were pretty solid,” he said. “They’re (Barrie) a first place team. They didn’t hang their heads, I thought we did very well. I was very proud of how they reacted to the adversity and they came through well. If you take out a couple of the early innings, it’s a totally different game.”

The game ended with a fly ball to deep centre field by Dave Blanch.

It was a hit that seemed to hang in the air for a long time and for a few seconds it looked like it might be the saving grace for the Athletics, but the Sox fielder managed to get the wheels in motion and caught the ball to end the inning and the game.

The Athletics will be back in action tonight (Thur., July 18) to host the Stayner Sluggers at Riverdale Park.

The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
