A job well done

Dear editor:

Last month we celebrated International Day of the Midwife and marked Physician Appreciation Day. It seems only fitting to commend our front line maternity care workers – obstetricians, paediatrians, midwives, nurses and doulas – on a job well done in our community. The end of May brought an onslaught of births to Stevenson Memorial Hospital and I had a the great honour of witnessing the staff in action at one of their busiest times.

It was just over six years ago that the birth unit closed and a group of dedicated, caring individuals along with concerned citizen groups banded together to revitalize  this essential health care service.

With the reopening of the birth unit in 2008 came many positive changes. The baby boom of the last few weeks was a good reminder of what we stood to lose and just how much was actually gained.

With the projected growth of New Tecumseth and its surrounding communities we are fortunate to have all that we do. Thanks to the individuals and groups who made birth in this community a reality once again. My heartfelt thanks, appreciation and admiration continues to go out to all those that make birth so special for so many families in this area.
