Adjala-Tosorontio council has passed the bylaw which will see the creation of an employment corridor along Highway 89, west of Alliston to Highway 50.
In a recorded vote Monday night, council voted unanimously to pass the byway which will allow commercial and industrial enterprises to locate to the 147 hectare area.
The passage of the bylaw comes on the heels of opposition from both the Alliston Business Improvement Association Area and the owners of the Smart Centre commercial area to the east of Alliston. Both expressed concerns about the need for additional commercial space when existing commercial areas are either empty or are available for new buildings.
Township mayor Tom Walsh said that Adjala-Tosorontio had never objected to any commercial or industrial proposals in Alliston or in greater New Tecumseth.
“We always felt that we benefited from these new developments,” he said.
Councillor Doug Little said that the new commercial area would be of benefit to both consumers and business people.
“When you look at the permitted uses in this new area, there is not way that a large car dealership will be coating to downtown Alliston. These uses are different than for there,” he said. “I think that we’re doing the right thing and after our discussions with the County, I expect they will got to bat for us.”
The commercial/industrial/employment corridor has been talked about for the past two decades for the area west of Alliston along Highway 89.
As to the eventuality of an Ontario Municipal Board hearing on the bylaw, mayor Tom Walsh said that he hoped that “cooler heads will prevail.”
