Adjala-Tosorontio residents don’t appear to be rushing out to buy licenses for their dogs this year.
Township councillors learned Monday night that licenses were sold for 1,120 dogs during the first three months of this year compared to 1,531 for the same period in 2014.
Those residents who failed to register their dogs by March 31 will be facing a hefty extra charge for the rest of the year.
The township charged $22 to license each neutered or spayed dog and $35 for each non neutered or spayed dog until March 31. After March 31, the license fee jumped to $40 for each neutered or spayed dog and $50 for each non neutered or spayed dog.
Council debated whether staff should be visiting residences to see if their dogs had been licensed. Owners of dogs, who were licensed in 2013, will be sent a letter requesting them to license their dogs for this year.
In the past, a contracted Canine Control Officer use notifying and collecting license fees from owners. Karl Korpela, Director of Building and Enforcement Services which has responsibility for canine control, also reported that the township received 30 complaints during the first quarter of 2014 about barking, running, trespassing, dangerous and menacing dogs.
