Adjala-Tosorontio council has given its support to a group of residents from the southern part of the township who are opposed to the construction of a 52 metre cellular phone tower near Loretto.

After hearing a lengthy presentation from residents at Monday night’s council meeting which asked township use its efforts to stop construction of the tower because of concerns about the impact of the tower’s electromagnetic waves, aesthetic appearance and possibility of increasing lightning strikes in the area.

Kim Narowski and Deb Ellies told council that one of their major concerns was that there was no guarantee from Bell Canada that service would be improved for all residents in the area.

Councillor Doug Little said after hearing the presentation that the key question was “What do you want us to do?” He said that from the presentation and the letters that he had read opposing the tower from township residents that if was clear that the tower was not wanted in its proposed location.

Councillor Floyd Pinto said that he was also disturbed that there were no guarantees that service would improve for all local residents.

“I would really like to see fibre optical cables laid throughout the township which would guarantee improved Internet service for all. I know that Bell is not interested in this service but Rogers has indicated that the cables could be installed for as little as $8,000 per kilometre.”

Council eventually passed a resolution opposing the choice of the proposed location at 2636 Concession 7 in former Adjala and asked Bell to provide other alternatives.
