Adj–Tos restricts flag raising

April 9, 2014   ·   0 Comments

Adjala-Tosorontio council has decided to limit those occasions when the flags are raised at township owned properties.

Council adopted its first official flag policy at council on Monday night.

The policy will restrict the type of flag flown from the township flag poles to the Maple Leaf flag, the Union Jack which is the Royal Flag, the Ontario provincial flag and the township flag. No other flags will be flown form the township flagpoles.

The policy is more restrictive than some neighbouring municipalities which recognize charitable organizations or other causes  by flying their flags for a day or week.

Both New Tecumseth and Essa raised the a flag from Autism Ontario last week to recognize the battle against the neurological disease.

Councillor Doug Little said that he felt that the township would be best off flying strictly government flags.

“In some ways, I don’t  feel that we should be involved in supporting causes these ways,” he said.

The new policy will also ensure that only one flag is flown from each flagpole which is the proper etiquette for displaying a flag in Canada.

Council also considered the erection of additional flag poles at the township offices but deferred a final decision until evaluates the cost for each flagpole which will be close to $1,500 each.

The new flag policy will cover flagpoles at the townships’ municipal works buildings, fire halls and parks.
