Adjala-Tosorontio council has approved a request to Simcoe County to allow an increase in the projected population of Everett by 2,000 people via the recent decision by the Ontario Municipal Board to give Simcoe County an additional 12,000 “bonus population growth” under Amendment #1 under the Greater Golden Horseshoe Growth Plan.
Councillor Doug Little made the motion to make the request at the end of Monday night’s council meeting and urged his fellow councillors to move as quickly as possible before other municipalities in the county move to claim the additional population.
“We have a (provincial) election underway and who knows what will happen after it is over. The county recognizes the northern area, known as the “Barzos” property, as an urban area but we haven’t been allowed the necessary population allocation in the past for it to be used for development,” he said. Councillor Scott Anderson said that he felt that the direct motion was not appropriate as it had been included on the agenda which was approved before the meeting.
Little responded that since the area under consideration was already approved as a future urban area under Adjala-Tosorontio Official Plan Amendment #8 that it was a logical move.
“I think that we got to move forward and rise losing everything and our chances for developing this piece of land. We could end up with zero,” he said.
Council voted to approve the request. The amendment does not include the population growth under Official Plan Amendment # 15 which would see Everett grow by upwards of 9,000 people.
