Alliston Hornets drop to third after loss to Schomberg

The Alliston Hornets dropped to third place in the North Carruthers division of the Provincial Junior Hockey League after taking a loss to the Schomberg Cougars on their home ice Thursday, Nov. 3.

Alliston and Schomberg have traded places in the standings several times this season as they battle it out through the regular season schedule.

It’s still a tight race for the top three spots in the division. The loss leaves Alliston a single point behind Schomberg and three points behind the first-place Stayner Siskins who has 22 in the points column.

Thursday’s game had the Hornets in the lead after a single first-period goal from Andrew Maltby.

The second period cost the Hornets big time when the Cougars came out and scored three goals by the 11:09 mark in the frame to take a 3-1 lead.

Alliston battled back scoring two late in the period to make it a tie game with one period remaining.

Alliston’s goals came from Connor Hiles and Owen Fralick.

It was all over in the third period when the Cougars shut out the Hornets for the duration of the game and left the ice with a 5-3 win, to get the two points and move back into second place.

After the weekend, the Orillia Terriers are in the number four spot in the standings with an 8-4-1 record.

They are followed by the Innisfil Spartans in fifth place and the Huntsville Otters in the number six spot.

The Hornets have two more road games against Huntsville and Innisfil.

They will return to home ice at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre on Friday, Nov. 18, to host the Penetang Kings.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.
