Angus commercial proposal heads to NVCA

Essa council is not inherently opposed to a proposal for a large commercial development on Highway 90 on the outskirts of Angus beside the No Frills plaza.

All members of council  said that the proposal on a property currently owned by Leesa Turnball and to be developed by Georgian International could be a positive for the township.

“I am a supporter of new commercial sites in our community,” said mayor Terry Dowdall as did deputy mayor Sandy Macdonald.

The proposed 42,000 square foot property is located on the same property where a Canadian Tire was slated to be built about five years ago but did not proceed.

Garry Bell, a planner for Skelton Brumwell, said that the new plan foresees a larger commercial property with as many as seven commercial buildings which a total square footage of 42,000 square feet.

Bell said that the proposal has already heard from a number national retailers such as Staples,  Harveys, Swiss Chalet and the Royal Bank of Canada.

The main stumbling block continues to be the elevation of the property and the possibility of floods affecting the property.

Bell described the property’s elevation as “interim” as the result of the clearing of the forest that was on the property. The planner said that the Nottawasaga Conservation Authority continues to have concerns about the use of the property.

Although no application has been submitted for development of the property but there have been discussions with Simcoe County and the NVCA’s planning department.

Council decided not to formally support the proposal but indicated that their support would be dependent on meeting all planning regulations. Councillor Keith White, who represents Angus, said that he felt that the project would be a go if it was able to meet the required technical issues.
