Annual Mayor’s Breakfast highlights development and urbanization

May 16, 2013   ·   0 Comments

The Town of New Tecumseth has experienced unprecedented growth in recent years, and the level of development is expected to increase in the near future.

Alliston, Beeton, and Tottenham are deemed as growth areas by the province of Ontario and Mayor Mike MacEachern expressed his excitement for the future during the annual Mayor’s breakfast, “We have three beautiful and historical downtown cores. Each area is unique, and our towns are proving to be excellent communities for current and future residents.”

Members from various neighboring municipalities including: Barrie, Innisfil, King Township, and Bradford West Gwillimbury attended the annual event, which featured a guest speaker from LiveWorkLearnPlay (LWLP).

LWLP is an international organization specializing in city revitalization and developing new urban towns. LWLP partner and principal, Rob Spanier attended the breakfast and focused on the benefits of development for municipalities. Similar to New Tecumseth – Innisfil, Barrie, King Township, and Bradford West Gwillimbury are expecting a growth in population throughout the next five years.

Spanier believes the new generation of buyers are expecting a lot more from their communities, and it’s time for municipalities to develop properly, “It’s not about what you’re thinking or planning anymore, it’s about what you’re doing”.

Spanier was quick to admit that New Tecumseth is at an advantage for attracting developers and buyers because of its distinctive downtown cores. With downtown areas in Alliston, Beeton, and Tottenham, the municipality provides developers with a rare opportunity to create three unique suburban cores.

The next generation of buyers are discouraged by the prices of Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), which puts municipalities like New Tecumseth in a favorable position. The increased real estate prices in Toronto and the GTA are forcing buyers to new areas, but Spanier warned that these buyers have expectations, “Municipalities must focus on creating an ‘urban suburbia’, to provide a downtown feel for its new residents.”

It’s evident that New Tecumseth and its neighboring municipalities are building for the future, to provide their residents with a strong and resourceful community.
