Parents play a vital role in public education and Ontario’s Parents Reaching Out (PRO) Grants are designed to encourage parents’ involvement in their children’s education, and support student achievement and well-being.
This year, Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) school councils were granted more than $78,000 to connect with parents through the Ministry of Education’s PRO Grants for School Councils and PRO Grants for Regional Projects.
This year’s Parents Reaching Out grant process has been announced and an online application is now available. PRO grants are provided to select applicants who develop projects, events, or training in support of parent engagement. Schools are encouraged to apply for one or both of the following grants: • PRO School Council Grants: The PRO Grants for school councils are intended to support school-based initiatives to reach parents who face barriers to becoming involved in their children’s learning at home and at school. School councils may develop proposals individually, with other school councils in the same board or with other groups in the school or community. Grants are available to school councils for a maximum of $1,000 per school. • PRO Regional/Provincial Grants: The PRO Regional/Provincial Grants are available to Parent Involvement Committees (PICs), parent organizations, school boards, non-profit organizations and post-secondary institutions working in partnership with parents to support student achievement and well-being. Eligible projects must align with at least one of the following four strategies of the ministry’s parent engagement policy: Parents as Partners; Welcoming School Board and School Environment for all Parents; Skill Building Opportunities for Parents; and Enhancing Communication between School and Parents. A maximum of $30,000 per project will be made available for eligible regional/provincial initiatives.
PRO grant applications for the 2014–15 school year must be completed and submitted online by May 16. Detailed requirements, answers to questions and examples of exemplary projects are available online at: http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/parents/reaching.html.
