Members of the Tottenham ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) Support Group presented the Our Town Food Bank in Tottenham with a cheque for $500 last week. The funds were raised at the 2014 and 2015 Family Fun Day – the group’s main fundraiser of the year – held at A Taste of Freedom Country Inn. Group founders Carrie Kortis (centre) and Melissa Toten (right) present the cheque to Kelly Eagan, food bank volunteer, for use in restocking the shelves post-Thanksgiving. Although many people think to donate between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the food bank often hits hard times over the summer months, when many people are on holidays. The Tottenham ASD Group supports the food bank, despite having a disappointing turnout (and therefore not meeting their own fundraising goals for 2015) as a percentage of the families who are members of the Group also use the food bank. “It was the best way to give back to our community and support our members at the same time,” said Toten. “We’ll use the balance of our funds to offset the cost of equine therapy for our members’ children,” confirmed Kortis. The Tottenham ASD Support Group meets the second Wednesday of the month at A Taste of Freedom at 8 p.m. Dues by donation.
