Athletics Junior team struggling with Creemore

June 14, 2013   ·   0 Comments

Anything can happen in baseball.

After ending the first inning of their Tuesday night (June 4) game against the Creemore Braves with a 4–0 lead, the Alliston Athletics Junior team took a nose dive when the visitors came back in the second inning and scored five runs to take the lead.

That included a hit to a hole in deep in the field between left and centre that drove in two runs.

“They just hit the ball to where we weren’t,” said head coach Colin Iddison after Tuesday’s game.

The Braves did have a good game when it came to connecting wood to the ball and finding all the empty places on the field.

But despite the loss, the Athletics didn’t play a bad game – they just found themselves up against a lot of balls happened to drop into all those holes in the field.

The Alliston squad found early success with a single from Dave Blanch that brought in a run and a hit to left field by Zack Riddell that earned him a double and brought in two runs.

After a short third inning that saw both teams blanked, a Creemore player dropped the ball over the fence in centre field for a two-run homer that gave the Braves a two run lead in the fourth.

Alliston’s Tyler Smokler notched a double to drive in a single followed by another Athletics run on an error on a throw to first base.

With the bases loaded with Creemore player in the fifth inning, a double, then a hit to deep centre field drove in four more Braves runs to end the inning.

With so many batter finding the sweet spot on the wood and driving deep to the outfield, both teams made changes on the mound in an attempt change the tide of the game.

It must have just been one of those games, because a new thrower on both sides didn’t seem to slow things down.

The Braves ran up the total in the later innings and managed to leave with the win. Iddison, obviously disappointed at the loss, said they just put this loss behind them.

“We’re already prepared for our next game,” he said. “We’ve got to get it out of their heads about what happened tonight and move on.”

The last time these two teams met in game one of the season on May 15, the Athletics held the Braves to two runs for the game and left with a 6-2 win.

It was the third loss for the Alliston team after six games.

There is still lots of baseball let in the North Dufferin Baseball League season with 13 more games on the schedule for the Athletics.

The Athletics will be back on their home diamond at Riverdale Park in Alliston this Thursday, June 13 to host the Stayner Sluggers.

They play on the diamond located at the north west corner of the park.

The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
