Trying to keep their hands from freezing was a challenge for players during Wednesday nights North Dufferin Baseball League junior game between the Alliston Athletics and Orillia Minors.
With a steady light drizzle and cold north wind blowing across the diamond for the entire game, most of the crowd that showed up to watch the game were bundled in parkas and blankets while players tried to keep their hands from going numb.
It never rained hard enough to call the game so the teams got down to business to play to the end.
The Athletics got off to a good start in the first inning with a man on first and second.
A single from Tyler Smokler drove in the first run.
A second athletics run came in on the next play.
Orillia brought in their first run in the second inning on an error when a throw to first base missed the mark and gave the Minors some extra seconds to make it across home plate.
Alliston’s Mac Sealy drove the ball to deep right field for a double in the second inning that brought in two runs to keep the Athletics in the lead in the early going.
With the bases loaded, the Minors brought in a new pitcher to try to reestablish their game.
Smokler drove in another run on a single to stretch Alliston’s lead going into the third inning.
With three men on base the Minors gave up another run when a walk brought another Athletics player across the plate.
Alliston pitcher Zack Riddell ended the bottom of the third inning quickly with the first batter thrown out at first base and striking out the next two batters to go into the fourth inning.
The Minors rallied late in the game and manged to score five but the Athletics held on to take the win 6–5.
The Athletics will travel to Orillia on Saturday, June 1, to again face the Minors.
They return to Riverdale Park in Alliston on Tuesday, June 4, to host the Creemore Braves. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
