On Saturday, May 3rd AWARE Simcoe held an information session on its Food & Water First campaign. AWARE Simcoe is a “citizens’ group that works for transparency and accountability in government, and to protect water, the environment, and health.” AWARE monitors the councils of Adjala-Tosorontio, Innisfil, Bradford West Gwillimbury, Clearview, Collingwood, Essa, Midland, New Tecumseth, Oro-Medonte, Penetanguishene, Ramara, Severn, Springwater, Tay, Tiny, and Wasaga Beach to ensure that their decisions have a positive affect on Simcoe County and its environment. AWARE has campaigned against numerous environmental issues, including: the Melancthon mega-quarry, Dump Site 41, the Midhurst secondary plan, and many other sensitive issues throughout the province. Ontario has experienced a 41% decline in its prime farmland since 1921, and AWARE has put a strong emphasis on preserving what’s left.

AWARE Simcoe’s Food & Water First campaign mainly focuses on the preservation of prime farmland, and the protection of source water. The Food & Water First initiative is made up of Ontarians who support planning policies that ensure the provinces control over its future. AWARE and its members have dedicated themselves to providing the means to communicate effectively and collaboratively with decision makers, to demand required policy change. As our communities continue to grown and develop, farmland and water will become even more important than they already are, this is why journalist Dale Goldhawk has joined AWARE Simcoe, “These are the things that are important for our future. We have to keep the fight for Food & Water First going.” Ontario is losing approximately 127,000 acres of farmland per year, something that has been one of AWARE’s biggest issues, “We should not think of ourselves as rightful inheritors of our forefathers land, but rather the borrowers of our children’s land.” To Join AWARE Simcoe and its Food & Water First campaign, visit www.aware-simcoe.ca
