Dear editor:
My name is Glen Potts and I have been a resident of Beeton for the last 12 years. You might have seen me walking my White German Shepherd. I take pride in the fact that I am always cognisant of the way my dog and I interact with the public. By this I mean do we as dog owners walking our dogs ever wonder about the effect we have on people when we are approaching them? Not all people are comfortable around dogs, large or small. Even if it means crossing the road to alleviate any concerns they may have, I do so with pleasure.
Owing a dog is a privilege, not a right. I have noticed in the last few years a somewhat cavalier attitude in regards to canine ownership. While walking my dog on leash I have been confronted more than a few times by dogs off leash or not being watched by their owners, and this makes for a very unpleasant and stressful experience. I have asked a number of dog owners in passing what is their primary concern is when walking their dogs on leash. Evidently I am not alone in my displeasure, as all replied that it was loose dogs or dogs being walked off leash. Some have said that they avoid walking on certain streets, or walk their dogs only at certain times.
And while I’m writing this letter to the editor I would like to remind my fellow dog owners of the importance of poop and scoop. There are certain areas in town that are much more offensive than others and some homeowners must be livid.
Thankfully 95% of dog owners in Beeton are very courteous and respectful towards the general public and other dog owners. A little common courtesy costs nothing but goes such a long way. The fine weather is finally approaching and I wish everyone a safe and happy experience when out and about with your dog on a leash.
Glen Potts,
Beeton
