The South Simcoe Police Service is urging pedestrians and cyclists alike to “Be Seen at Night”, now that warmer weather is here.
There has been an increase in pedestrian and cyclist collisions across Ontario in recent years, and our dark rural roads make it difficult for drivers to see.
“Wearing bright, reflective clothing, and walking facing traffic are two strategies that can increase safety for cyclists and pedestrians alike”, said Staff Sergeant Steve Wilson.
Tragedy can be averted by using common sense, and practicing safer ways to walk or bike at night on area roads. Cyclists are required to have a light on the front of their bicycle, and reflectors on the rear. Pedestrians wearing reflective clothing are readily seen.
Statistics indicate that on average, 100 pedestrians are killed each year on Ontario roads.
Drivers are also reminded to watch for other users of the roadway. Cyclist and pedestrians are out more in spring and summer, and the warm weather also brings out wildlife. Automobile collisions with deer are at their highest during these times of the year.
“Be aware of your surroundings.”, said PC Paul Catling. ”It only takes a moment for tragedy to happen.”
