A dozen people, four pounds of garlic mashed potatoes and one minute. This was the sum of the Mashed Potato Eating Contest at the Alliston Potato Festival this Saturday.
A dozen people, four pounds of garlic mashed potatoes and one minute. This was the sum of the Mashed Potato Eating Contest at the Alliston Potato Festival this Saturday.
Angela Jaskot beat out eleven other contestants in the adult round, beating the runner-up by a spoonful. This year, a kids division was also available for the first time, where Michael dominated the seven other contestants.
But the mashed potato contest isn’t just about the entertainment of watching people stuff their faces. Fun events like this one help to bring more people to the downtown core of Alliston while showing people the variety available to those who shop locally.
Organizer Christine Brayford is the Coordinator of the Alliston Business Improvement Association, and believes it is important to support local businesses, and encourages others to do the same.
“We just do it to help bring people downtown,” Brayford says of the mashed potato eating contest. “It increases income-output traffic and then more people shop local.”
All potatoes for the event are donated by Ontario Potato Distribution Industries (OPDI), and have been for approximately 20 years. The potatoes are prepared by Sara’s Catering Company, which donates its services for the event, bringing even more of a local element to the festival.
