The Beeton–Tottenham Business Improvement Association (BTBIA) wants you to consider your own reasons for shopping local.
Is it to support the businesses that sponsor your children’s sports team? Is it because it saves you gas? Is it because it helps to improve the local economy? Or, is it because they are your friends and neighbours? It’s all of the above plus much more.
The BTBIA’s newest campaign ‘Shop Local?’ challenges residents and business owners alike to consider why shopping local benefits everybody. The initiatives title includes a ‘?’ to get people thinking about how every dollar spent locally counts.
“We want people to question it,” said Susan Iacoucci, BTBIA coordinator. “Think of your own reason for shopping local and start making the decision to do so more often.”
Iacoucci has been delivering reusable shopping bags (made from recycled materials) to local businesses in the downtown cores of Tottenham and Beeton. Shop owners participating in the program will identify themselves with a poster in the window. When you shop there, ask for a bag to take home your purchases. If the vendor is out of bags don’t worry, there will be more bags delivered by Iacoucci in the next round – featuring new tag lines, as provided by you, the residents of New Tecumseth.
Banners featuring the ‘Shop Local?’ logo have been hung in Tottenham and Beeton to reinforce the BTBIA program, which coincides with organizations mantra to promote the area as a shopping district.
Although the BTBIA understands the need to provide for your family in the most economical way, they are hoping that as a result of this campaign you may choose to shop local more often.
“It may be possible to find a cheaper price out of town at a large box store but when you stop, do the math, think about how shopping local benefits you and your family. It makes more sense to try and find it here first,” said Iacoucci.
