BTBIA comes out on top, Pitch–In Week concludes

The Town of New Tecumseth was part of a 47-year old spring tradition and made the community look great while doing it.

Last week, volunteers in Beeton, Tottenham and Alliston were out in record numbers to take part in the annual PITCH-IN program to clean up the streets, parks and schools. Mayor Mike MacEachern said this year roughly 3,600 people came out to participate from various schools, groups and businesses and that the town was thrilled with the response.

“This is the best participation we’ve had in the event and it has been growing actually over the last couple of years,” he said. “I remember early on we didn’t have a lot of groups that were involved. It was last year that we were very pleased with the support we had.”

MacEachern said better advertising and more volunteers, added with a healthy dose of competition between the Business Improvement Areas in Beeton-Tottenham and Alliston, has really got the program off the ground.

Each year the two BIA’s face off for the prestigious “bronze broom” for whoever wins the cleanest community. This year, the BIA in Beeton-Tottenham has come out on top.

Mayor MacEachern said pitch in week was officially over on April 26, but the town has extended the program due to popularity and said people can still call in and get their gloves and garbage bags to participate.

“We’re just really encouraged by the amount of people that have wanted to get involved,” he said. “I think people just have pride in their community and it’s just an opportunity to get out there, help clean it up, tidy it up for the summer months and I think people are just excited to get out there.”
