Changes to waste still causing an uproar

Essa mayor Dowdall says that he won’t back down on his desire to have Simcoe County re-open its changes to waste policy.

Dowdall said Monday that since last week’s council meeting, and the attention to the changes in waste pickup, that his phone continues to ring off the hook.

“Essa township residents are still angry about the end of the $50 vouchers which allowed them to take large items to the landfill site. And added to the decision to use calculate the waste rate on one’s assessment, a lot of residents are furious. And I heard from some local council members who tell me to keep raising the issue.”

Dowdall noted that instead of a flat charge for waste, those with higher assessment will be bearing more of the burden.

“Someone with a house worth in the high six figures will be paying $300 to $400 per year instead of in the mid $100. It will be of great benefit to the northern municipalities which traditionally have had lower assessment values than down here,” he said.

The Essa mayor said that the flat rate seemed more appropriate for waste disposal. “Everyone got to put out one bag per week with no differences made for those with high assessments.”

The issue of waste management will likely be raised at Wednesday night’s Essa council meeting. Dowdall was told last week that the township could not offer its own free vouchers to township residents to use an independent transfer site.
