Rogers TV staff were joined by members of the community, family and friends at the Gibson Centre to celebrate the launch of their new season, which kicked off September 3.
Originally the channel content was combined with Barrie programming, but last November a standalone channel was created, localizing the content to New Tecumseth. Cindy MacDonald, Rogers TV station manager says the support from the community has been overwhelming.
The new season will see more hours of locally produced programming than ever before, including sports coverage from high school level sports to minor league, as well as some brand new shows this fall. “Talk of the Town” features guests from the area, and MacDonald says it’s a great opportunity for local people to be part of the community programming.
Another new show called “Future Prospects” focuses on engaging and empowering youth to deal with life challenges, while encouraging confidence. After just one episode, the community started to give positive feedback about the content of the show.
“It’s neat when you can get back to the grass roots,” said MacDonald. “People want to know what’s going on in their own back yard.”
Anyone interested in suggesting an idea for a show, or wanting to appear as a guest on an existing show can make a request online. MacDonald also said volunteers are always welcome, and knowledge of the industry is not required.
“It’s all about access, and that’s what we’re here for,” she said. “Our job is to be reflective of the community, and we do our best to be reflective of that.”
Mayor Mike MacEachern spoke at the event, indicating the Town’s delight in the channel.
“What excited us most when Rogers approached us was the opportunity to open up our council meetings,” he said, pleased that now it’s easier for people to find out what’s happening in town.
The local channel is digital cable 65 with Rogers TV, and will air regularly until December. Visit www.rogerstv.com to find out more about volunteering, guest appearances or to view the full broadcast schedule.
