Cooling stations open in New Tec

August 21, 2013   ·   0 Comments

A humidex advisory has been issued for New Tecumseth.  The public is encouraged to call or visit family, friends and neighbours to ensure they are okay. This is especially important for isolated adults and seniors who are at great risk of suffering from heat-related illness. Other at risk groups include people with chronic and pre-existing illnesses, infants and young children, people on certain medication and those who are marginally housed or homeless.

In addition to using air-conditioned shopping malls, local libraries and neighbouring community centres as places to cool off, Municipal Cooling Centres are available for those in need. Please see the following locations.

Primary cooling stations:

• Alliston Memorial Library Branch – 17 Victoria St. E, Alliston

• D.A. Jones Library Branch – 42 Main St. W., Beeton (closed Monday)

• Pam Kirkpatrick Library Branch – 55 Queen St. S, Tottenham (Closed Monday)

Secondary cooling stations as required:

• New Tecumseth Recreation Centre – 7300 Industrial Parkway, Alliston

• Tottenham Community Centre – 139 Queen St. N, Tottenham

Cooling Centres offer an air-conditioned place to rest indoors and receive a cool drink and find information on how to “Beat the Heat”. Service Dogs will be allowed in the Cooling Centres but unfortunately household pets will not be allowed due to health concerns.

Humidex advisories are issued when the temperature reaches 30 degrees and the maximum humidex is 40 degrees.
