The costs associated with monitoring closed and open landfill sites for impact on possible local groundwater contamination has come down but it is still running between $15,000 to $60,000 per year per site, Simcoe County councillors learned last week.
Adjala-Tosorontio mayor Tom Walsh asked for a total cost of the monitoring program.
Rob McCullough, the county’s director of Solid Waste Management, told councillors that the cost has been running around $750,000 per year,
He said that the county had been spending $1,000,000 per year but it had decreased in recent years because a number of remedial projects had been completed on various sites.
“It averages about $30,000 per year per site,” he said.
In response to another question about the lack of monitoring for a number of closed small landfill sites in Ramara, McCullough said that the department’s monitoring program depended on the age, size and location of the sites.
He said that some very old landfill sites are not monitored on an annual basis.
