County council sticks to guns on new garbage plan

April 18, 2013   ·   0 Comments

Simcoe County councillors have rejected a request from Midland to continue its practice of vacuuming leaves from its residences in addition to the county picking up leafs in bags.

Members of the Corporate Services committee rejected the request at last week’s meeting by a margin of six to five.

Midland had offered to pay $42,000 to continuing the vacuum but some county councillors felt that the council should be consistent in the services that if offered.

Essa mayor Terry Dowdall said that he felt that the county should maintain “consistent service” throughout the county. His municipality was recently told that it could not offer large item vouchers to its citizens.

Springwater mayor Linda Collins said that she felt that having uniform service for all throughout the county was the best move.

“We’re not dealing with sending mixed messages about waste if we don’t have a uniform stately.”

Midland deputy mayor Stephan Kramp argued that the vacuuming was simply an optional extra which would have no detrimental effect ecologically.

“We have the equipment to do the vacuuming and it fits into the county’s core mandate,” he said.

He argued that if municipalities like Essa were allowed to hand out large item vouchers that it would “attack collection contracts. Kramp said that the vacuuming  is just another option which doesn’t impact the contract.”

Simcoe County council will give final approval on the measure next week.
