County organics program down

Five years into its Green Box organics program, participation by county residents seems to have stalled.

Members of the county’s Corporate Services committee learned last week that a survey conducted by the county last year revealed that the organic capture are was at 44%, down 3% from the audit conducted in 2010.

The blue box capture rate was up 2%, to 86% of available material.

Adjala-Tosorontio mayor Tom Walsh told the committee that he hoped that the county would expand its organics program to include pet waste which is makes up about eight percent of the total waste stream.

“I don’t think that it would be much more of a stretch for us to include pet waste,” he said. The county has also looked at including diapers, which would be more complicated and expensive to recycle, in the organics program. They form six per cent of the waste stream.

An accompanying repot noted that  the audit showed 28% of the material in the household garage are diapers and pet waste, 36% is green in materials and 10% is blue box materials.

The audit cost $73,000 with the province providing $39,000 of the cost and the county the balance.
