As stewards of the environment, the County of Simcoe wants to ensure it remains among the leaders in terms of reducing its carbon footprint.

With this in mind, the County launched a new energy management project in September 2012 to reduce energy-related greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, encourage energy conservation, and promote the expansion of renewable energy generation at its facilities, including its Administration Centre in Midhurst.

“County Council believes that we have a responsibility to ensure that we are preserving and protecting our environment for future generations,” said Warden Cal Patterson. “That is why the County of Simcoe continues to take important steps to reduce our energy consumption.”

As part of the project, the County reports annually to the Ministry of Energy on energy use and greenhouse gas emissions; the information is then posted online. A five-year Energy Conservation and Demand Management Plan in also in development; it is scheduled for completion July 1, 2014 and will also be available online.

The County worked collaboratively with participating member municipalities through the Energy Management Program to meet the requirements of the Act and compiled the data summarizing each corporation’s energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions for 2011. Municipalities will continue to submit energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission reports to the Ministry of Energy on an annual basis in compliance with the provincial Green Energy Act.

In addition to the mandatory reporting requirements of the Act, many other opportunities have been identified in the County’s energy management project, including green energy procurement, carbon footprint analysis, greening the County’s vehicle fleet, and establishing a culture of conservation throughout the Corporation.
