Cupcakes and mashed potatoes

Dear editor:

I find it obscene when our local newspapers feature food-eating contests. Or, I simply find stuffing so much food into your gob obscene!

This world, our small world, has millions of people who do not have enough food to sustain  them. Worse, it is mainly the children of the world who fall into this category.

So, here in Canada, where foodbanks can’t keep up with the demand, contest exist where gorging on pies, cupcakes, hot dogs or mashed potatoes can be a fun event or even one for fundraising.

Someone should take the evidence of the extreme food-eating contests to the Third World and try to explain the phenomenon.

Maybe the food being gobbled down isn’t that nutritious (full of carbohydrates) but a starving child or adult might appreciate a mouthful.
