D&D Meats – Bringing the taste of diversity to Rurban Market

June 23, 2022   ·   0 Comments

Every week there is something different at the Alliston Rurban Farmer’s Market.

One of the favourites is farm-fresh cured-style meats from D&D Meats in Alliston.

They have a variety of different meats from pepperoni to German salami.

While D&D Meats no longer produces their own products, they source meat from all over Ontario, including Mennonite Country where the special salami is a big seller.

They have a store on Victoria Street in Alliston and bring their meats to the Rurban Market as well as other markets across the province.

“When my grandfather started the company, we used to make everything by hand,” explained Matthew Swan of D&D Meats. “Now, we have a lot of Mennonites that do it, we have a few different suppliers. A lot of it is my grandfather’s original recipes.”

He brings different samples to the market and visitors love to find the meat that usually can only be found by travelling to a different region.

“We have different kinds of salamis, pepperettes, and cheese curds,” Matthew explained. “We have summer sausage – we get that one right from the Mennonites – they make the absolute best summer sausage. If you like hot and spicy, the hot peppercorn is my number one seller.”

Based in Alliston, Matthew takes his products on the road to various festivals and events around the province.

“We were at the Burl’s Creek Automotive Flea Market, and we did the Midland Butter Tart festival,” Matthew said of how they travel to the different festivals. “We have lots of fairs and festivals to go to. We go all over Ontario. In the beginning of July, we’ll be in Kincardine at the Scottish festival, that’s supposed to be a pretty big festival.”

The Alliston Rurban Farmer’s Market takes place every Saturday at the corner of Victoria Street and Centre Street S., in Alliston.
