The Dodge Goulter Memorial Golf Tournament will be taking place on Sept. 8 and is looking for people to sign up to help support a good cause.
In 2009, the 13-year-old Dodge was killed while riding his bike on the third line. While it has no doubt been hard for family and friends, they have all come together to take part in an annual fundraiser led by his mom Alicia.
Each year since, Alicia has planned a different event to raise money that goes toward a fund that helps children in the community get into sports.
“We help local children play organized sports, so it could be something as simple as a pair of ballet shoes or helping out with registration,” she said. “Pretty much whatever they need to play sports, we’ve taken care of. We’ve helped 13 children and two youth baseball teams so far.”
The fact that it’s all local is something that is appealing to many, as money that is raised goes towards helping children right within the immediate community.
To get things going, Alicia contacted a bunch of local dance studios and sports organizations to let them in on what she was doing.
“I let them know that we’re available to help,” she said. “They tend to know who we’ve already helped and then they’ll let me know and say, ‘we’ve got one student that needs help this year, can you pay for their registration?’ or whatever it is.”
There have been many different needs for the 13 children that have benefited thus far and the need will no doubt only get bigger.
One baseball team that has been helped out was aptly named the ‘Dodgers.’
This is the first year Alicia is organizing a separate golf tournament and next year she said the hope is to even start a scholarship for a student who is active in sports.
“This year I had several people interested in golfing, especially my husband, so I decided to go off on my own and do it.”
The tournament will be held at Kettle Creek Golf Club and organizers are currently selling tickets and looking for people to sign up and participate. Organizers are also looking to find some sponsors to donate door/raffle prizes.
Tickets are $70 for both the golf and dinner at the Tottenham Legion afterwards at 6 p.m. and $30 for just the dinner.
Dodge was a big car enthusiast, lover of bikes and avid sports fan, so Alicia knew right away that this was what she needed to do to honour her son’s memory.
“He was an avid football fan and player,” she said. “His dream at one point was to be a US college football coach. He knew that sport inside and out. You could ask him about a college game from 1970 and he could tell you about it. He lived and breathed football and he liked his dirtbikes. I knew that he would like this if I was helping kids in sports.”
