The Fraser Institute released its annual Report Card on Ontario’s Secondary Schools, and schools within Simcoe County ranked quite well. Banting Memorial High School (BMHS) was the County’s highest-ranking public high school. Although BMHS’s ranking of seven out of ten was its lowest since 2008, it’s still within the top 250 of Ontario secondary schools. Provincially it’s ranked 214 out of 725. The school achieved a 7.6 in 2011 and for the first time in five years, BMHS scored below 7.3.

Regardless of the positive results, there is room for improvement. Of all the tests written, 20.9% of BMHS’s results were below the provincial standard. Ranking two out of four. Students who wrote the literacy test experienced great results, 84.5% of students passed. Those students who needed to write the test again, due to failing the previous year, had a 68.4% pass rate.

St. Thomas Aquinas ranked 522 out of 725 schools, with an overall ranking of 5.2 out of ten. The literacy test saw 72.4% of those who wrote it pass, and 44.8% of rewriting students pass as well. Jean Vanier Catholic High School in Collingwood, ranked 125 out of 725, becoming the County’s highest ranked school.

The Fraser Institute’s annual report card is extremely important. The results help parents chose the right secondary school for their children, but most importantly benefits the schools. Once the results are released, the schools are aware of which areas need improvement.
