Essa council, at a special last meeting last Wednesday, officially applied for financial assistance from the provincial government for the tornado which hit Angus on June 17.
The township had 14 working days to apply to the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance program. Council reviewed the application and discussed those items which might be eligible for funding from the province. Funding from the province could be as high as $10 million but would be given as a supplementary payment to the payments from insurance policies. In addition to the 100 plus houses which were damaged by the tornado, the fund could provide funding for a number of farms and businesses which were hard hit by the tornado.
The township might also see some funds for the extensive overtime which township staff had in meeting the disaster. Council also decided to formalize the distribution of funds raised by the Tornado Relief fund which now has around $80,000 in its coffers. Council hopes to have a six member board which will decide on the disbursements.
Council directed staff to contact a number of township residents who expressed a desire to serve on the board and will make the appointments at a future council meeting.
