Essa council has directed township staff to keep a file on the costs associated with the recent flooding of downtowns in Muskoka and Halliburton.
Deputy mayor Sandie Macdonald made the request at the last council meeting in light of requests from some developers to build on areas prone to flooding in the township.
“I think that it would be really instructive to have that information available. I know some towns have allowed construction of buildings in areas where flooding was supposed to happen for 500 years and happened this spring,” she said.
In Minden Hills, upwards of 10 businesses and 100 houses were damaged by the flooding which is estimated to cost in the millions of dollars.
Township staff will report back to council.
