Essa: Council to respond officially to ratepayers’ sign committee

May 30, 2013   ·   0 Comments

Essa township has directed its staff to respond to a sign campaign by the Angus Ratepayers’ Association which claims that Angus’ sewage system is in danger if a sewage line from a proposed subdivision in Angus is allowed to hook up to the treatment plant.

Deputy mayor Sandie Macdonald asked for an official response from council after getting numerous phone calls about the signs which began appearing in the Angus area about two weeks ago.

“I have been receiving five phone calls per day about it from people. I think that we should have a response on the website which is factual about the issue.”

The owners of the proposed 200 plus home subdivision have been looking at extending a pipeline along the fifth line to hook into the sewer at the southwestern corner of Angus. The proposal is in its earliest stages. The developer would be paying for all of the costs of constructing the line and residents  would be paying regular sewage rates for usage.

Township mayor Terry Dowdall called the ratepayers’ association “widely misinformed” on the issue.

“Honestly, the capacity is there and the more users on a sewage system help to keep the per capita fixed costs down.”

Councillor Ron Henderson, who represents Baxter, said that he could say some things a little less graceful about the ARA’s campaign.

“But I’ll try and control myself,” he said.

Township CAO Greg Murphy said that the sewage treatment plan, when it was constructed, received a large grant from the province. In a sense, we all paid for part  of it.”

Township staff will draft a response which will be brought back to council.
