Paul Macdonald, Essa township’s fire chief, will be retiring this year.
A report from Macdonald on his upcoming retirement was on council’s agenda last week. Macdonald became the township’s volunteer fire chief in December, 1997 and the township’s first full-time fire chief in 2006. Macdonald joined the fire department in 1979 as a volunteer.
Macdonald said that in a report to council that he was approaching 35 years of service to the township and was planning to retire at some point this year.
Council received a report from the chief offering the various options for selecting a new chief including an internal selection process with by the fire chief to recommend candidates to council or establishing a Hiring Committee consisting of all or some of the members of council to asset in the internal selection process.
In 1997, council and the township’s CAO east as board and reviewed candidates for Assistant Fire Chief. Macdonald was selected and became chief later in the year.
