Punting into the wind may have caused the coaches to re-align their strategy for the field layout during some parts of Sunday’s TNT Express games at Mel Mitchell field in Beeton, but for the most part it was a good day for football.
The Express hosted two games two games on Sunday, June 2, but both teams came up short to the visitors.
Atom division
The Atom division started off the day with a noon kick-off against the Brampton Bulldogs.
It didn’t take long for the visitors to get a hold on the game scoring on the second play of the game with a long run down the side of the field to score.
Another Brampton goal in the first quarter left the Express with a lot of work to do to get back into the game.
Struggling to make any gains on the field the TNT Squad went into defensive mode early in the second quarter and managed to keep the Bulldogs pinned down.
Express players Calum Muncey, Luke Rideout, Sarah Medcalf, Oliver Rapin, and Jacob Dean, figured into some good stops on the field.
After a third Brampton touchdown, the Express received the kick-off and Lucas Snowdon gained some yards to give TNT a good field position on the kick-off return.
Starting the second half with a 26 point deficit, the Express tried the throwing game with quarterback Edwin Haley making a good effort to find his receivers.
The fourth quarter again found the Express in trouble in their own end but a nice tackle by Jacob Dean, and a superb sprint and take down by Daniel Sheridan stopped the Bulldogs from scoring late in the game.
The Atom team remains winless after three games into the season.
The squad will return to their home field at Mel Mitchell this Sunday, June 9, to host the Toronto Jets.
The kick-off is scheduled for noon.
Peewee division
The second TNT home game of the day got underway with the Peewee division taking on the Toronto Jets with a 2 p.m. kick-off.
The visitors opened the scoring early in the first quarter.
The Express response on defence turned out a good performance with TNT digging in and producing some good stops by the D-line including nice take downs by Trevor McDonald, Liam Hunter, and Benjamin Posedi.
After taking possession of the ball on downs, the Express put out a good effort including nice runs by Drake Thomson and Daniel Austen in the second quarter.
The half ended with the Toronto team in possession of the ball and TNT’s Ethan Foat driving through the line to end the scrimmage with a take down for a loss of yards.
The Express got on the scoreboard in the second half with a TD from Nick Coleman, but that’s all the Express could do for the day and had to settle for the loss.
It was loss number three for the TNT Peewee division team.
The Peewees will go on the road for two games travelling to Ajax / Pickering on Saturday, June 8, to face the Dolphins, then on to Orangeville on June 16, to meet the Outlaws.
They return to home turf at Mel Mitchell Athletic Field on Sunday, June 23, to host the Cambridge Lions.
The kick-off is scheduled for noon.
