Express JV squad has tough opener

“We’ve got to get back to basics in practice,” said TNT Express Junior Varsity division head coach Dave Wood after Sunday’s game one loss to the Cambridge Lions.

The JV squad failed to score against the visitors and allowed 49 points against in their season opener.

The Cambridge team had early success scoring in the first quarter after a hard drive brought them to the five yard line.

They managed to score four more TDs before the clock ran out in the first half.

If anything it was a good learning experience for the team who Wood describes as “a young team with not a lot of experience.”

Even with the loss the JV squad still demonstrated a lot of skill and potential on the field.

Express player Damion Edwards played both sides, offence and defence, for the game and made spectacular tackle after a Lions player broke from the pack and made a 60 yard run that was stopped when Edwards caught up to him and brought him down at the five yard line.

Later in the game the Express were in scoring position on a couple of hard drives from Mark Anderson who punched through the Cambridge line for some good yards.

“They are a very strong team,” Wood said of the Cambridge Lions. “They are well coached and they executed very well.”

A strong wind blowing across the field from the north didn’t help either team when i came time to kick. The ball would get hung up in the air and drop when trying to punt against the wind, but that’s something both teams had to contend with.

“We’ve got a lot of basics to work on,” Wood said, and worked out a strategy for the next practice with the coaches following Sunday’s loss.

The Express will travel to Shelburne on Sunday, June 2, to face the Orangeville Outlaws.

The Outlaws are hosting the game at Centre Dufferin District High School as their home field is not available.

The Express will return to their home field at Mel Mitchell on Sunday, June 9 to host the Twin Cities Predators. The kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
