The TNT Express hosted their home opener at Mel Mitchel field in Beeton on Sunday, May 19, with three division games to get the season underway.
Atom Division
The Express Atom division encountered some early trouble in their 10 a.m. game against the Markham Raiders when they found themselves deep in their own in the first quarter.
The Raiders managed to get three touchdowns in the first half to gain a healthy lead over the hometown squad.
The Express turned out a solid performance on offence with a nice first down run by Lucas Snowdon, and two major gains by running back Calum Muncey.
When the second half got underway, the Express received the kick and Brandon Jordan caught the ball and returned for 30 yards.
The Express lit up the scoreboard when Ethan Mahon ran into the three yard line to set up TNT for a charge to the goal, followed by Snowdon who crashed through the line to score.
On defence, Brock Kostiuk, Jacob Ursomarzo, Jaden McCord, and Brison Atherley, made some solid stops on defence.
The Express were back in the game in the fourth quarter when Brandon Jordan scored a second Express TD but the TNT squad couldn’t score any more and had to settle for a 27–12 loss to Markham.
Peewee Division
The Express Peewee division played the second game of the Sunday home opener with a 12 p.m. start against the Markham Raiders.
The Raiders were first to score in the first quarter.
The Peewees came out fighting in the second quarter with a nice first-down run by Nick Coleman.
When the Markham squad took possession, the Express defence kicked into gear with good stops from James Baskett, Jack Blouin, and Jacob Moore.
The Markham squad scored two more TD’s before the end of the half.
The second half started with a nice down field drive by quarterback Gabriel Haley.
On defence Benjamin Posedi and Connor Burlon figured in some good stops against the Raiders.
Late in the game the Markham squad was in scoring position on the five-yard line but the Express defence put the stops to the plays with good tackles from Haley and Moore, and QB sack drove the Raiders back.
The Express couldn’t score by the time the clock ran out and had to settle for a 23–0 loss to the visitors.
The Peewees will return to their home field at Mel Mitchel field in Beeton on Sunday, May 26, to face the Metro Toronto Wildcats.
The game is scheduled for 10 a.m.
