Express Varsity Division remains undefeated

The TNT Express Varsity Division has maintained their first place standing in the Ontario Minor Football league with a 23–14 win over the Cambridge Lions on Sunday (June 30) at Mel Mitchell field in Beeton.

It was the sixth consecutive win for the Express squad who remain undefeated for the season.

“We knew to run the ball as opposed to pass the ball like we did in the last game, (June 8, vs Cambridge)” said Express head coach Mario Addorisio. “We didn’t want to pass until the end of the game. We had to a couple of times, but it was mainly a running game. Mike Gautreau and Keiffer (Fowler), they just carried the team. When you run the ball a lot you wear down the other team.”

The Express did wear down the Lions after being behind 13–3 early in the game.

The Cambridge squad scored the first touchdown seven minutes into the game.

TNT’s Hayden Bristow kicked a field goal in the second quarter to light up the Express side of the board.

On the defensive side, Matt Biamonte, and Tyler ‘Creepy’ Kraly made some solid stops.

The Express started to really come alive late in the half when QB Andrew Tee did the quarterback sneak and ran for 30 yards for a first down.

Matt Biamonte caught a long pass to score in the last play of the first half.

The Express returned for the second half with what seemed to be a new effort to take the game beginning with a solid first down run by Michael Gautreau.

Tee did it again in the fourth quarter with a first down run followed up by another charge from Gautreau that dropped the ball at the one yard line.

Tee dove over the top of the pile in the next play to cross the goal and bring the Express closing in on the Lions.

Keiffer Fowler bolted into the end zone to catch a pass for the two-point convert.

Trailing by two points, the Cambridge squad started a final desperate attempt to get back in the game by going to a throwing strategy to move the ball down the field.

The Express sealed the deal late in the game with a pass to Gavin Wills-Drury in the end zone to give the TNT squad 23 points for the game.

“Our plan was to keep their defence on the field as long as possible,” Addorisio said. “We had sustained drives. We just wanted to have the ball at the end.”

The Express Varsity squad will travel Hamilton on Sunday, July 14, to take on the Steel City Steelers.

They return to Mel Mitchel field in Beeton on Sunday, July 21, to host the Rexdale Raiders for the last game of the regular season.

The kick-off is schedule for 2 p.m.
