A new pilot project by the Town of New Tecumseth recreation department will give kids with special needs a place to have some indoor fun during this long Winter and into the Spring.
The Field House Fun program is designed to offer an unstructured type of play on the indoor turf in the field house at the New Tecumseth Recreation Complex in Alliston.
“It’s a Rec Department program and we’ve partnered with the Children’s Treatment Network and Community Support Services,” Explained Senior Supervisor of Recreation, Wendy Rowland. “It’s a program for children with special needs and their siblings. The underlying theme is ‘just have fun.’”
The Rec department has a full range of activities planned including hula hoops, Lego, building blocks, balls, drawing, parachute games, obstacle courses, and Simon Says.
This program is a pilot project. If enough people take part, the program will expand and include more dates and activities.
The Field House is a good venue for this type of program – especial for kids with special needs. The field house is indoors and has a safe and soft artificial turf floor.
“It’s unstructured play in an indoor setting. We try to create something for everyone. The more people that show up, the more we will do,” Rowland said.
The program is open for kids from infants to 17 years. Parents are required to stay during the activities.
There are four inaugural dates – all on Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. – on March 6, April 3, May 1, and June 5.
The fee to attend is $12 at the door.
