Going to school and taking advantage of all the opportunities available for a young person is something that is quite often taken for granted in our modern western society.
In many countries, those opportunities simply don’t exist or are very limited, especially for girls.
The Because I am a Girl initiative, founded by Plan International, aims to ‘end gender inequality and promote girl’s rights’, and four local girls have decided to help by raising funds for this initiative.
Tabitha and Madeline Twilley, and Spencer and Rachel Cowl, will be selling pink lemonade during Kid’s Week at Guild Chiropractic Wellness Centre in Tottenham in support of this cause.
“We found out a few months ago from an on-line ad that you could start a pink lemonade stand,” Spencer explained. “It’s a fundraiser for girls who are less fortunate. We thought it would be good to have a day off school and raise awareness.”
A day off school doesn’t mean the girls are neglecting their own studies – it’s a professional development day for teachers so classes won’t be in session.
“We’ll have pink lemonade, buttons, and a donation box,” Madeline said. “The money raised will give girls in other countries an opportunity to go to school. We’re going to raise as much as we possibly can.”
The pink lemonade stand will be open on the front porch of Guild Chiropractic Wellness Centre at 111 Queen St. S. in Tottenham on Thursday, June 6, from 4 – 6:30 p.m, and Friday, June 7, from 8:30 – 11 a.m.
